After years of longing for a backyard pool to help beat the summer heat, I finally took the plunge this year and bought a Summer Waves 10ft pool for my family. As a pool ownership newbie, I wasn’t totally sure what I was getting myself into. But after tons of research and a few hiccups along the way, I’m happy to report that owning this Summer Waves pool has been an amazing experience for us!

In this blog post, I’ll take you through my journey of buying, setting up, and maintaining a Summer Waves 10ft above-ground pool. I’ll share tips on choosing the right pool, installation, maintenance, accessories, and more. Whether you’re considering a Summer Waves pool or just starting your research on owning a pool, hopefully you’ll find this a helpful guide. So dive on in – the water’s fine!

Why I Chose the Summer Waves 10ft Pool

I spent a lot of time researching different pool brands and models before settling on the Summer Waves 10ft pool.

Here were my main reasons for choosing this model:

  • Size: The 10ft length felt like the perfect size for my medium-sized backyard. Big enough for family fun and exercise, but not overwhelmingly huge.
  • Affordable Price: Especially compared to customized in-ground pools, the Summer Waves was budget-friendly at around $500-600. A worthwhile investment in my book!
  • Easy Assembly: Many reviewers said the Summer Waves pool was easy to set up in just a few hours, with 2-3 people doing the work. Much more doable than a big construction project!
  • Durable Material: The 3-ply PVC construction and rust-proof metal frame seemed super sturdy and built to last. Important when you’ll have kids playing in it!
  • Aesthetics: I loved the sleek lined design in a sky blue color. Functional but still visually appealing for my backyard space.
  • Good Brand Reputation: Overall, Summer Waves pools had great reviews for quality and customer service. I was impressed with their 5-year warranty too.

For the size and price, I couldn’t find a better quality above-ground pool option. And many glowing reviews confirmed I was making a good choice with Summer Waves.

Prepping for My Pool Installation

After deciding on the Summer Waves 10ft pool, it was time to get my backyard ready for installation day. Proper site prep is crucial for ensuring your pool stays securely in place and level.

Here are the key steps I took:

  • Marked out a level installation area at least 8-10 ft wide. Used a shovel to flatten and smooth the ground.
  • Removed any sticks, rocks, roots, etc. that could puncture the pool liner.
  • Measured for where the pool would sit and marked where to dig shallow trenches for leveling the base.
  • Dug 2-3 inch trenches around the perimeter to hold the bottom ledge in place.
  • Purchased and spread pool base sand within the perimeter to create a flat, soft base. Compacted the sand to make an even plane.
  • Got a pool pump, filter, and all accessories ahead of time so they’d be ready to go after filling the pool.

Doing this site preparation work was tedious but so worth it. Having graded and flattened the area first prevented many headaches down the road with structural issues.

Pool Installation Day: Putting It All Together

The big day had arrived! With the help of a few handy family members, we unboxed all the components and got to work on assembly.

Here’s how the installation process went for us:

  • Started by attaching the bottom ledge pieces together and locking them into the trenches around the perimeter. Crucial for stabilizing the entire frame.
  • Next came inserting and connecting the vertical side poles into the bottom ledge. Had to gently flex the poles into a curved position as we worked around the circle.
  • Added the inner and outer top ledges and locked them onto the top of the vertical poles. They really helped solidify the structure.
  • Unrolled the large pool liner and carefully spread it out within the frame. Took time to smooth out all wrinkles and get the edges over the inner ledge.
  • Once liner was in place, inserted the top connectors to join the two ledges and add inline braces for maximum support.
  • Attached the skimmer and filter pump according to instructions. Ran the filter hose across the outer ledge.
  • Last step was filling it up with water! Rolled out the garden hose and let the water start flowing. Added chemicals as it filled.

With 3 adults working together, we had the whole thing assembled and ready to swim in under 5 hours! I was thrilled at how relatively smooth the installation process was. The Summer Waves pool went together precisely like the diagrams showed.

Pool Maintenance Tips to Keep it Sparkling

Now for the not-so-fun part – regular pool maintenance. But it’s super important for keeping your water clean and swimmers healthy.

Here are my top tips for easy Summer Waves pool care:

  • Test water chemistry 2-3 times per week and add chlorine, pH balancer, or any other needed chemicals. Keep those chlorine and pH levels ideal.
  • Run the filter pump for at least 8-12 hours daily. More during heavy swim times or hot weather. Keeps water circulating and clean.
  • Skim the surface daily with a net to remove leaves, bugs, and other debris before they sink. The skimmer basket on my model makes this easy.
  • Brush pool walls and floor weekly to loosen particles that can harbour bacteria. Vacuum regularly too.
  • Every 2-4 weeks, shock treat the pool water to refresh chemical levels and burn off contaminants.
  • Check all hoses, connections, seals regularly for leaks and make repairs promptly. Keeps water in the pool, not pumped into the ground.
  • Periodically clean or replace filter cartridges when they appear really dirty and compromised.
  • Inspect overall pool structure often for issues like rust, damage, loose connectors, etc. Fix right away to avoid bigger problems.

Regular maintenance definitely takes some discipline. But it soon becomes a normal routine. And the results – crystal clear water and toxin-free swimming – make it all worthwhile!

Cool Pool Accessories to Enhance Your Backyard Oasis

One of my favourite parts of owning a Summer Waves pool is all the fun accessories available to make our backyard oasis even more awesome. Here are some of my top picks:

  • Inflatable lounges – We got a huge floating sofa that fits 3-4 people. SUPER relaxing for tanning and floating around hands-free!
  • Underwater lights – LED lights that illuminate the pool with colorful effects at night. Transform into a nighttime water wonderland!
  • Diving board – Great for daring dives, cannonballs, flips, and other stunts. Just watch out for belly flops!
  • Aqua hammock – Let the gentle rocking of the water lull you into a nap on these floating hammock-lounges. Blissful!
  • Pool floats – From giant unicorns to pizza slices, find funny and functional floats to lounge on. Endless options!
  • Water toys – Everything from volleyballs to water guns, pool basketball hoops, foam pads for tumbling, and more. Have a summer blast!
  • Canopy shade – Stay cool while lounging poolside with a canopy offering sun protection. Choose ones that anchor securely into the ground.

With so many accessories to choose from, you’re limited only by your imagination (and budget)! The right add-ons can really complete your backyard paradise.

Keeping My Pool Crystal Clear: Water Maintenance Must-Haves

Owning a pool means becoming best friends with water testing kits, filtration, and pool chemicals. Maintaining proper water balance and sanitation is so crucial.

Here are the key products I use to keep my Summer Waves pool sparkling all summer long:

  • Test Strips – Essential for monitoring chlorine, pH, alkalinity, hardness and more. I test 2-3 times per week to stay on top of chemical levels.
  • Liquid Chlorine – My go-to sanitizer to boost chlorine and shock treat the water. Pre-dissolved for quick and even dispersion throughout the pool.
  • pH Increaser – Baking soda-based formulas like this help raise pH to optimal levels for chlorine effectiveness and swimmer comfort.
  • Algae Prevention – This liquor shields against green, black and mustard algae. Since warmth and sun fuel algae growth, it’s a must have for me.
  • Clarifier – When water gets cloudy, I use clarifier to clump tiny particles together so they’re caught in the filter. Restores sparkling clarity fast.
  • Skimmer Basket – Essential for removing leaves, bugs and debris floating on the water’s surface before they can sink and decompose.
  • Telescoping Pole – Lets me easily reach and scoop out stuff with the skimmer net. No need to dip my whole arm in!

Regular testing and quick correction prevents so many water quality issues. While maintaining chemical balance is work, it’s satisfying to have a crystal clear pool that’s healthy for swimming and fun.

Top Safety Tips for Pool Owning Parents

As a parent, making sure my Summer Waves pool is safe for my kids is a top priority. Pool accidents and injuries are no joke.

That’s why I have these crucial safety measures in place:

  • A locked and latched gate surrounding the entire pool area. Keeps unattended pool entry impossible.
  • Established pool rules reviewed with kids regularly: no running, diving in shallow areas, pushing others, etc.
  • Active adult supervision whenever the pool is open and kids are present. We watch them like hawks!
  • Swim aids like vests, noodles, and rings offered to less experienced swimmers for extra support.
  • CPR basics known by all adults. We took a family class together to be prepared for emergencies.
  • Safety equipment like a hook, buoy, and first aid kit available poolside. Prepared for worst case scenarios.
  • No night swimming allowed. Poor visibility in dim evening light makes supervision much harder.
  • A buddy system encouraged so kids monitor each other in addition to adults watching them.

Owning a pool comes with major responsibility. But with preventative safety steps like these, I feel fully prepared to keep kids secure while still having tons of summer fun.

Pool Party! Tips for Awesome Gatherings

One of my favourite parts of having a Summer Waves pool is being able to host pool parties for family and friends!

Here are my top tips for throwing an amazing pool gathering:

Send Evites – Use Punchbowl, Evite or other digital invites for easy guest communication. Include details like dates, times, parking, food plans, etc.

Stock Up On Supplies – Buy extras of water toys, pool floats, sunscreen, towels, and paper products. You’ll use them up fast!

Plan Games & Music – Fun activities like Marco Polo, dive contests, volleyball, water limbo, and races liven up the party. Create upbeat playlists to set the mood.

Offer Shade Areas – Not everyone will want full sun exposure. Set up shade tents, umbrellas, and tables around perimeter for cooling off.

Provide Plenty Of Food & Drink – No one wants to leave the pool! Have on-deck coolers with cold drinks plus lots of easy snacks and picnic food for fueling the fun.

Send Ground Rules – Before the party, communicate pool guidelines like no glass, supervised kids only, etc. Establish expectations.

Clean Up Crew – When it’s over, wrangle some helpers to collect all garbage, take down decorations, store away toys, etc. Many hands make light work.

With the right planning, nothing beats the summer memories made during an epic pool party bash with family and friends!

Closing My Pool for the Season: Winterizing Tips

As much as I wish pool season could last forever, eventually winter arrives. Time to shut down my Summer Waves pool for the cold months.

Here’s how I properly winterize it for storage:

  • Add winterizing chemicals to prevent algae growth and protect vinyl liner.
  • Completely drain out all water from the pool and pump system using hoses and pumps. Remove drain plugs.
  • Disassemble filter equipment, clean out hoses, and bring pump parts indoors to prevent freezing damage.
  • Cover pool with a tightly sealed winter cover, firmly strapped on and anchored. Prevents water collecting on the cover.
  • Clean pool walls with filter powder meant to prevent staining and deterioration during off months.
  • Check components like skimmer, ladder, etc and make any needed repairs while empty. Much easier to spot and fix issues now.
  • Consider adding an Gizmo to prevent liner sagging from weight of ice and snow if you live in cold climate.
  • Store pool chemicals, toys, accessories in a protected indoor location so they’re ready to go come spring.

Taking time to properly close down the pool will help ensure it stays in top shape for seasons to come. Then we can excitedly restart the whole cycle again next summer!

Reflecting on My First Year as a Pool Owner

As the seasons change and I officially have a year of pool ownership under my belt, I’ve been reflecting on the experience.

Overall, deciding to buy the Summer Waves 10ft pool was one of the best purchases I’ve made for my family. We’ve created so many fun memories in our backyard oasis this summer. My kids are actually developing swimming skills that will keep them safe. We’ve grown closer hosting pool gatherings with loved ones. And when the weather gets hot, we have an instant vacation-like escape right at home.

Has owning a pool required maintenance, patience, time, and money? Absolutely. But the benefits and enjoyment have far outweighed the work involved. I’m already looking forward to next summer’s adventures!

My advice for new pool buyers: don’t hesitate if you’ve been debating the plunge into pool ownership. For families especially, having your own pool creates endless opportunities for play, exercise, parties, relaxation and lasting memories. It’s a major lifestyle upgrade.

While pools do need regular care and attention, it’s a small price to pay for all the magic that happens within those water walls. Go for it – you won’t regret it!
